LAMDA

HCTG offer LAMDA classes for children aged 8 and upward on a Tuesday evening or a Saturday afternoon.

Lamda has replaced elocution examinations of the past, to a practical communication and performance assessment, providing learners with the skills and the confidence that help them succeed in life.

We know how vital confident communication and speaking skills are for our children’s future success.  Almost every career requires the ability to engage effectively and communicate with others and we believe that LAMDA provides the skills which will positively affect the personal, social and academic development of our children.

Ruth and Sally R are our LAMDA teachers.  The 45 minute session includes warm up activities and practice towards a publicly recognised exam.  The aim is to develop a sense of personal achievement and self-belief, which enables to children to gain in confidence as speakers  and performers. Many children enjoy these lessons in a smaller environment, taking exams when they are ready, giving them a qualification and UCAS points at the higher levels.

Each class has up to 5 pupils and takes place in St Nicholas Church Hall (Tuesday) and Harpenden Academy (Saturday).  We have an excellent success rate!  Mostly with Merit or Distinction!

We Offer

  • Music Theatre (developing skills in acting through song)
  • Acting (developing skills in performance and the spoken word)
  • Verse and Prose (developing a clear speaking voice, good body language from reciting pieces)
  • Public Speaking (developing a clear speaking voice, good body language in giving presentations)

We try to create each class so that they have children of a similar age working towards a similar grade in a similar subject.

Fees are £15.60 + VAT per session and are payable for the term in advance.  There will be additional fees for the exams, which we try to arrange at a local venue in December and June (or can be taken at a public centre).

Most pupils taking grades 1 – 5 will take an exam twice a year.  Grades 4 and above are targeted towards pupils aged 12 and over, due to the material used, the amount of theory and general knowledge that they require for these exams.  Students who are younger than this when they reach this level can either switch to a different discipline, take 2 terms before taking their exam or take a break, rejoining the classes when they are older (space permitting).   Pupils taking grades 6, 7 and 8 will need two terms to cover all the material and be ready for their exam.

Pupils will need to take time out of school to attend their exam, much as they do for music exams.
